Tumble Dryer Burning Smell

Can you smell burning when your tumble dryer is running?

Stop the dryer, switch it off at the wall and unplug it. A burning smell should always be taken seriously. Most of the time it comes from fluff collecting around hot parts or a belt that is slipping, but it can also mean a part is overheating.
East Coast Appliances repairs tumble dryers across Colchester, Chelmsford and Ipswich.

What causes this problem?

  • Fluff (lint) built up in the filter, the filter housing or around the heater
  • A blocked or squashed vent hose on a vented dryer, so hot air cannot escape
  • A worn or snapped drum belt, which often smells like burning rubber and stops the drum turning
  • Worn drum bearings, rollers or felt seals rubbing as the drum turns
  • A failing motor overheating
  • A faulty thermostat or temperature sensor letting the dryer run too hot
  • Something caught in the drum or door seal, such as a tissue or a small plastic item

Common symptoms

  • A hot, dusty or burning smell during or after a cycle
  • A smell of burning rubber, often with the drum not turning
  • Clothes coming out much hotter than usual
  • The dryer cutting out part way through a cycle
  • Squealing, grinding or scraping noises
  • The outside of the dryer feeling hotter than normal

Can you fix it yourself?

  • Unplug the dryer and let it cool completely before checking anything
  • Empty and clean the fluff filter, and brush out the slot it sits in
  • On a condenser dryer, rinse the condenser unit and let it dry, following the manual
  • On a vented dryer, check the vent hose is not kinked, crushed or blocked
  • Check the drum and door seal for anything left behind in pockets
  • Check whether your model is under a safety recall on the manufacturer’s website or Electrical Safety First’s recall checker

Only run the dryer again if you found and cleared an obvious cause, and stay with it while it runs. If the smell comes back, or you saw scorch marks or melted plastic, don’t use it again until it has been checked. Our tumble dryer repair service can find the cause safely.

When to call a professional

Call an engineer if the drum has stopped turning, if you can smell burning rubber or hot electrics, or if the dryer is cutting out. These usually point to a worn belt, bearings, a motor fault or a temperature control problem, and they are not safe to keep using.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use a tumble dryer that smells of burning?

No. Stop using it and unplug it. Clean the filter and check the vent, but if the smell comes back or you can’t find a cause, have it checked before using it again.

Why does my tumble dryer smell of burning rubber?

This is often the drum belt slipping or wearing through. It is usually followed by the drum no longer turning. Replacing the belt is a common, straightforward repair.

Why does my tumble dryer smell of burning but still work?

Fluff around the heater or a partly blocked vent is the most common reason. Cleaning the filter and vent often helps, but a smell that keeps returning needs checking.

Can you repair my tumble dryer in Colchester?

Yes. We repair vented, condenser and heat pump tumble dryers across Colchester and the surrounding areas, from £75 with a 3-month guarantee.
